I am a native Oregonian with over 25 years of experience working in mental health. I hold a Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology from Lewis and Clark College, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from Western Oregon State College. I am certified as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the state of Oregon. My background includes many health care settings, including hospitals, mental health clinics, and alcohol and drug treatment programs.

I believe the work of counseling is a unique process for each individual, and the treatment approach used must be determined by the best fit and needs of those served. I have a strong background in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), psychodynamic approaches, and group work. Mindfulness (mind/body) techniques are tools I use frequently with clients, and I find that focusing on a holistic approach to wellness is universally beneficial. Additionally, I have worked extensively with depression/anxiety, work dissatisfaction, management of chronic mental illness, and substance abuse.

On a personal note, I enjoy reading, film, and travel. I have a musical background and spent several years in an a cappella group. A highlight of my life was having the privilege to be a back-up singer on Linda Ronstadt's 2000 Holiday CD.

What can you expect from our sessions?

Approaches to how we work together will vary based on your preferences, personality, and learning style, as well as what has been proven most effective for your specific concerns. Effective counseling is based upon ongoing clarity of expectations and shared responsibility. This means your earnest participation is essential to success! I sincerely encourage feedback from you on what is working, or not working, in our sessions. My priority is to make the process valuable and beneficial to you, and that looks different for everyone. It is a process that we will work on together, with the understanding that making adjustments is a natural component of personal transformation.

You may encounter the following in our work together:

  • Homework/Experiments:  Learning to break a pattern—and to change your path, your mind, and your thoughts—takes practice. I may give you some homework, which shouldn’t feel like a math drill, but rather a data-gathering mission, the process of which will bring aspects of what you are working on into sharper focus.

  • Exploration around your personal search for meaning:  This could take shape in countless ways for each individual. You may call it spirituality, faith, or discovering your soul's wisdom. I have found in working with all types of people, that we feel better and more at peace when we can see purpose and understand or make sense of our path (past, present, or future).

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): CBT is an empirically-proven, effective treatment for many different concerns. CBT focuses on examining the relationships between thoughts, feelings and behaviors. By exploring patterns of thinking that lead to self-destructive actions and the beliefs that direct these thoughts, people with specific challenges can modify their patterns of thinking to improve coping.

  • Humor:  A good laugh can soothe tension, activate and relieve your stress response, and increase endorphins! It is essential to thriving and very much a part of me and how I work with people.
